The Internet of Things (IoT) is all about data – collecting it, analyzing it, and using it to complete necessary functions or tasks. Many IoT systems use sensors – and oftentimes many sensors – to efficiently gather this data. The more sensors there are, the more data there is to manage and assess. Bluetooth can be a great tool for this, but there are a few challenges when it comes to getting Bluetooth IoT sensor data to the cloud.
This is where the cloud comes into play. As part of an IoT system, the cloud provides a resource where companies can collect, store, and analyze this vast amount of data externally rather than within their own internal network. You could say that the cloud is the brain center for IoT. Sensors and other devices collect the data and perform the basic functions for which they were designed, but the processing and analyzing of this data typically occurs in the cloud. The ability to use the cloud in this manner saves companies a great deal of money – there’s less investment needed in their internal equipment – and allows for scalability. When hundreds of thousands or more sensors are in play in an IoT system, relying on the cloud, rather than enhancing sensors and other devices to analyze and act on data – saves money, time, and definitely resources.
