The theme of 2023 is change. Nick Earle, CEO and Larry Socher, SVP Strategy and Alliances at Eseye predict significant changes this coming year. The acceleration of disruptive technological and IoT trends is clear. Fragmentation is the order of the day, but at the same time, a paradoxical collision is taking place. Hyperscalers are upending decades-old paradigms about how technology and its uses evolve.
Over the last four years of predictions, Eseye have tried to balance predicting the short-term impact of specific changes with the long-run trends that remain in motion year on year. However, in 2023 we will hit an inflection point where things come together to deliver significant change to the IoT industry.
If there has been one overarching trend that has defined Eseye’s predictions, it is the breaking apart of the siloed approach to connectivity and its replacement with a vendor-neutral approach – one where IoT devices work wherever they are, not just according to which vendor they have signed up with.
Over the last year – with the growth of the eSIM, which allows choice between mobile networks – that vendor lock-in model has broken. At the same time, we have seen the emergence of important changes that shift the IoT business model in favour of the user, from the big plays made by hyperscalers, through to 5G networks which enable new use cases, and in turn place new demands on connectivity.
A growth in connectivity, user choice, and more valuable use cases, remains the long-run direction of travel for IoT, and that will no doubt come up year after year. But within that, Eseye sees five significant trends that will change the industry and move up the agenda for IoT manufacturers and Enterprise IoT managers in 2023.
